Two, new incredible tools announced! Those are Google's Screencast tool for Chromebook and Cast Moderator. Both make recording lessons and teaching so much easier.

Let's take a quick walkthrough, shall we?

Wait, See the Research Connection

Screencast and Cast Moderator are tremendous tools. Tools like this have a research connection you may be unfamiliar with. Let's take a moment to review it.

When you see this icon, you'll know it features research you relevant to the tool.

1- Screencast...Yes, Yes You Can!

Wish you had an easy way to record yourself or your screen via your Chromebook's built-in camera?

Wish you could easily skip sections of your video that you didn't want to have appear?

Wish you could write on your screen as you did made the recording?

Wish you could get a transcription of what you said automatically without special tools?

Now You Can...with Google's New Screencast!

Here's a quick, eight minute screencast walking you through the tool. It's pretty rough but you'll be able to see how amazing Screencast is.

Eric Curts (Ctrl-Alt-Achieve) writes that with Google Screencast, you can:

  • Record your entire screen or portion of your screen

  • Record your webcam and your voice

  • Annotate on the screen while you are recording

  • Generate an automatic transcript of the recording

  • Translate the transcript to any language

  • Edit the screencast by skipping portions of the transcript

And much more! Watch Eric's video walkthrough here. Richard Byrne (FreeTech4Teachers) also has a walkthrough video of this recently announced feature.

Visual Walkthrough for Screencast

  1. What you first see when launching ScreenCast....

2. This settings window allows you to determine several things including whether you are recording the whole screen or only a portion.

Use the Marker to annotate your screen when recording a screencast. When you turn off the Marker, annotations disappear.

This is the viewing window after a video has been processed. Note that you can omit portions of the video using the Transcript->Skip section tool.

Research Connection

Screencast makes flipped classroom easier:

Traditional classroom activities (such as lecture) are held at home or before the class, often via pre-recorded video or audio presentations, which prepares the students for more interactive, discovery, questioning, and engagement in active learning activities in the classroom itself.

The effect size is 0.57, and it has the potential to accelerate student growth.

3- Cast Moderator

Another tool is in the works. It's known as Cast Moderator. This tool makes it easy to wirelessly present your Chromebook screen.

Cast Moderator enables teachers to:

  • Share their screen to a connected device

  • Create an access code for students to use

  • Students use access code to see the that, when given to students, enables access for them
